Out of 20 seats, 4 seats are reserved for SC/ST candidates, preferably those who come from families traditionally connected with the performing arts.

Due to limited seats, 1 or 2 foreign students are admitted in a session. Foreign students should submit their candidature through Indian Embassy/ High Commission to the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. The School gives due consideration to applications recommended by the ICCR.

Note: The decision reached by the School in the matter of selection of candidates is final.

How to Apply :- The admission notice for the Diploma course is published in all leading newspapers in the month of February every year. Candidates are required to apply in the prescribed application form which costs Rs.150/-. Requests for the application form should be accompanied by crossed Indian Postal Orders of Rs.215/- (inclusive of Rs.65/- for postage) to be made in favor of:

Working Hours :- Classes are normally held from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm with breaks for tea and lunch. Rehearsals and other practical work continue to take place in the evenings up to such time as required and also in holidays as the case may be.

Essential Qualifications :-
1. Graduate in any subject from a recognized University.
2. Proficiency in Hindi and English.
3. Active participation in at least 6 plays or in any other theatre related activity. All applications must be accompanied by copies of testimonials and certificates etc.
4. The applicants age should be between 18 to 30 years. The upper age limit is relaxed by five years for candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.

Selection Process :- The screening of applicants for NSD is done in two stages
Stage I:At this stage the screening comprises of an audition or practical test of the candidates at the institutes four centers in Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore and Mumbai.
Stage II:Candidates who clear the first stage successfully then move on to stage II where they have to go through a 3-5 day workshop on the campus of NSD, New Delhi. The final selection is made on the basis of the potential shown by the candidates in the workshop

Fee Structure:-
Admission : Rs.50.00
Tuition Fee: Rs.80.00 per month
Costume for Exercise Classes : Rs.800.00 per month
Caution Money (refundable) : Rs.2000.00
Advance for Make-up Kit (adjustable) : Rs.1000.00
Students’ Union (membership fee) : Rs.24.00
Stationary : Rs.800.00
Hostel Rent per seat : Rs.110.00 per month
Electricity and Water Charges (adjustable) : Rs.40.00 per month
Hostel Expenses : Rs.14.00 per month
Medical Fee : Rs.1.00 per month
Mess Charges: Rs.650.00 per month (likely to vary from one month to another)

Scholarship: - NSD awards scholarship of Rs.3000.00 (Rupees three thousand only) per month to selected candidates.A student who is awarded such a scholarship by the School will be required to:

1. Execute a bond of Rs.72,000.00 to the effect that if he/she decides to discontinue the training before the end of three years, or is made to discontinue on disciplinary grounds, he/she will have to return all the disciplinary grounds, he/she will have to return all the money paid to him/her before such discontinuance.
2.Furnish a surety of Rs.72,000.00 duly attested by a District Magistrate/Collector/ Dy. Commissioner (Revenue Authorities).

Note: The selected candidates are covered by Risk Cover Insurance Policy and, are required to pay the premium amount which may work out to Rs.150.00 to Rs.200.00 annually. The School do not take any other responsibility beyond does not take any other responsibility beyond this insurance cover.

Academic Year and Vacation:- Every academic year is divided into two terms
i) 15th July – 15th December, followed by the winter vacation from 16th December to 15th January
ii) 16th January -15th May, followed by summer vacation from 16th May to 14th July.
These may however, be changed or curtailed by the School, if needed in special circumstances.

Medium of Instruction: -English and Hindi depending upon the subject and the situation.
